FOZ Racing Products Aluminum Mazda Radiator is
designed to be a drop in replacement for the stock radiator found on a
1990 through 1997 Miata. The radiator is built from the highest
quality Delphi core and is hand welded to maximize its strength.

Introduces Miata Aluminum Racing Radiator
Whether you’ve built a
Spec Miata or are pushing the limits of your Miata in autocross competition,
you’ve probably noticed that your stock radiator is not up to the task of
cooling your engine. While OEM radiators are fine for everyday driving,
they are not capable of cooling under the extreme conditions found in auto
racing. A good aluminum racing radiator is the answer.
Understanding the Hard Facts
OEM Radiators are designed to merely get the job of cooling done under
normal street operation at the lowest cost. Forget about cooling under the
stresses created during race conditions or by an engine that has been
modified to produce more horsepower. The harder an engine is pushed or the
more horsepower it produces, the more heat it creates. As engine
temperatures continue to rise, performance
eventually begins to suffer. Ultimately
these elevated temperatures place the engine at risk of serious damage.
Overheating is a leading cause of DNFs (Did Not Finish) in auto racing.

How It Works
Unused heat is removed from an engine through the coolant that flows
through jackets in the block. The radiators primary job is to
dissipate heat from the coolant as it leaves the block so that it can
be re-circulated through the block to remove heat once more.
Why an Aluminum Racing Radiator
There are two primary sources of cooling or heat dissipation within a
radiator. They are tubes and fins. Tubing is the primary source of
heat dissipation, while fins are the secondary source of heat
dissipation. Since tubing is much more expensive than the fins, most
OEM manufacturers have chosen to increase the number of fins in order
to reduce the amount of costly tubing required. A good aluminum
racing radiator does just the opposite. The amount of tubing is
significantly increased, while the number of fins is decreased so that
the radiator becomes much more
effective at dissipating heat.
|
A secondary
effect of the higher fin concentration found in OEM radiators is
that there is less room for dirt, debris and rubber to pass
through. In essence the radiator actually becomes clogged over
time, restricting the airflow that is so critical to the cooling
process. The lower fin count found in a good aluminum racing
radiator creates more space for the increased amount of dirt and
debris found at a racetrack to pass through so that airflow is
maximized.
Strength and
weight savings are final benefits of a good aluminum racing
radiator. A radiator tanks that have been welded to the tubing is
much better equipped for the rigors of racing than a radiator

wider tubes, compared
to a standard OEM radiator (left). The wider tubes create a
much larger surface for cooling. |

where
the tanks are affixed with epoxy or brazed to the tubing. The
lower fin counts and materials used in an aluminum racing
radiator also make it much lighter than a stock or OEM style
radiator.
FOZ Race
Products recently introduced a new Aluminum Racing Radiator
for Miata performance enthusiasts whether they chase their
passion on the street or in one of NASA or SCCA’s Spec Miata
classes. The radiator is designed to be an easy replacement
for the stock/OEM radiator found in a 1990 through 1997 Miata.
The radiator even comes standard with the tabs and brackets
required to mount the stock fan assembly. For more

The fins on an aluminum racing
radiator (see bottom picture) are also typically further apart
which allows the increased dirt and debris inherent to racing
to pass through more easily, instead of clogging the fins and
restricting air flow. (Top picture is a standard OEM radiator)
