Keeping It Clean

Starting my racing career out on road courses, I had little knowledge of the dirt. My father used to joke that I had never had a racing car sideways on purpose in my life. I’ve come to love pretty much every aspect of the dirt—with the exception of cleaning the car after a night of racing. I would never have imagined dirt and dusts ability to find its way onto and into every single surface and crevice of a racing car.

Short of hiring someone else to do it, I am sure that the job of cleaning a dirt car will always be a task. There are a couple of products that I have started using regularly to ease the job of clean-up.

The first product has been around for some time—Mudd Off. It is a releasing agent that makes it tough for dirt and grime to cling to the car. I begin coating my car with the stuff as soon as the car is clean and dry. I use a pressurized spray bottle so that it is easy to apply a fine mist to the entire surface of the car. Not only does it cut down on the amount of dirt that sticks to the car, but makes it much easier to spray that which does stick to the car off. I run Shox Skinz on all four corners of my car. Not only do they keep dirt and grime from sticking to the shaft of the shock, but also protect the body of the shock, particulary threaded shocks used with coil-overs.

The final item in my cleaning arsenal is Citrol by Schaeffer Lubricants. This is hands down one of the best products I have used. Much better than engine degreaser. A citrus based product, Citrol has a pleasant smell, yet goes to work gutting grease, grime and dirt from hard to reach areas like nothing I have ever seen. I generally spray it onto an area, let it sit for 20 or 20 seconds and then hose it off. I usually don’t even have to use any elbow grease.

If I am doing serious cleaning, I also use Valco’s Aluminum Metal Brightner and Polish. These products are an absolute must when it comes time for my winter over-hual.
