Midget Front Axles in
 Mini Sprints - Q&A Session

There are many advantages to the full midget front axle.  The quality and strength of the components is the top reason for the switch.

The introduction of the FOZ mini sprint a little over a year ago placed Speed Partz in a position to not only offer the traditional mini sprint front axle and components, but also a standard midget front axle and components. Although it was our decision to make the midget front axle the standard offering for the FOZ mini sprint, we quickly began receiving requests from customers with cars built by other manufacturers for a front axle upgrade kit. Over the past season these front axle upgrade kits have become a popular item and frequent source of questions from our customer base. In this article we address some of the most common questions we have received from customers concerning the trend towards a full midget front axle and components.

Why did you decide to make the midget front axle standard equipment on the FOZ mini sprint?

We certainly can’t lay claim to starting this trend. Over the past few seasons we have seen many competitors switching to a full midget front axle in their mini sprints. We didn’t really take notice of the trend until we had a customer suffer minor injuries and complete destruction of his mini sprint as the result of an axle failure. Unfortunately it became a story that we heard several more times in a short period of time. Although we are not sure if this is a problem that has grown in incidence or an issue that we have become more aware of through our increased face time with drivers across the country. We knew going in that the front axle needed to be an important point of consideration when designing our new mini sprint.

We've worked with many customers and car types including Bailey's, ERC's, Doemelts and many more.  We can custom build an axle to your car type, that will use our stronger midget style components.

One of our goal’s in designing the car was to create a package that was representative of what drivers were looking for. As we spent nearly a year talking with customers, the move towards a midget front axle received positive response from nearly everyone we spoke with. Although safety was most commonly the deciding factor, additional compelling reasons surfaced. Significantly better wear from the king pins and bushings was cited as a benefit several times by drivers who had already made the transition to a full midget front axle. However, beyond safety, another important consideration was the increased availability of midget front axle components. Although it is our hope that customers purchase our branded components, we felt that is was important that they also had the option to purchase from any source they desired—including the ability to purchase used components. Racers that are on the track are happy racers. While we have committed to keeping an inventory of parts to support our customer’s needs, we knew that keeping happy customers would be easier if they were not forced to have a single source for their needs.  Our first season of competition using the midget front axle along with the fact that the majority of the top mini sprint builders in the country have come to the same conclusion has provided support for our decision.

Speed Partz carries a complete line of parts and accessories.  When it comes to direct mount hubs, we can carry an assortment from all of the major manufacturers - so you have a choice.  Let us know, we carry Winters, DMI, Keizer, Weld and Real Wheels.

Is a full midget front axle significantly heavier than a standard mini sprint front axle and components?

Surprisingly the answer is no. One of our biggest reservations in selecting a full midget front axle centered around weight. We were amazed to find that the difference in weight was only a few ounces.

Is a full midget front axle currently required by any mini sprint organizations?

While many promoters and officials are outspoken proponents of the use of the full midget front axle, to the best of our knowledge there are not any organizations that require them.

One of our favorite parts of the midget front axle is the quality and reliability of the king pin.  These king pins are heavier duty and of a much higher quality.  We used to be forced to change king pins several times throughout the season because of the excessive play caused by wear.  These kings pins have been in our car for 2 seasons and are still in perfect condition.

What are the major differences between a midget front axle and a mini sprint front axle?

The major differences are in the diameter of the tubing and the quality of the components.

What’s included in your front axle upgrade kit?

Our kit includes a front axle that can be delivered either bare or with mounts, tabs and brackets already welded on. It also includes midget spindles, direct mount hubs, bearings, steering arms and a panhard bar slider. However, the contents of the kit can be easily tailored to your individual requirements.

What car manufacturers have you provided a front axle kit for?

Our axles are custom built to your specifications, however in the past year we have supplied front axles to driver’s competing in cars produced by manufacturers like Bailey, Bishop, ERC, EMC as well as many one off creations.

For several seasons mini sprint competitors have been successful using both types of axles. While the migration towards a midget style front axle is quickly gaining favor among builders and competitors, in the end the decision is one best made by the competitor according to his/her individual needs. Regardless of your decision we stand committed to supplying all of your requirements.  For more information call 513.874.2034.
